about
I wrote this song in 20 minutes after having not written anything for 6 months. It was at the height of the pandemic last year and I had all this anger, anxiety, and fear built up that I didn't know what to do with. The second I found the descending uke chords, the words just poured out of me, and at last I felt a little bit better.
My original blurb from my first release of this (just uke and voice):
Colonialism was the beginning of our downfall, extreme individualism in tandem with an unchecked capitalist economy is our end. I'm so tired of this place, and I'm one of the lucky ones. The bridge really drives it home...we can, and will, do so much better. But we have to plant the seeds and nurture them
lyrics
Who's that in the window looking in?
The reflection so uncaring,
Where have I been?
You tell me it's so simple
Just keep trying
Well if it's so simple,
Why do I feel like I'm dying?
Nothing's that easy
Nothing ever could
In this society, so diseased
Saying that we should
All be on our own now,
Convinced that this good
But we're a dying breed, it's plain to see
We've cut off all our roots to the ground
Who's that on the sidewalk walking by?
We're all so far apart
But I hear a collective sigh
They keep telling us, "Just keep trying..."
Well I keep trying, we keep trying, and yet
People are still dying
And none of it's easy
Nothing ever would
In this society, so diseased
Thinking that we should
All be on our own now
Convinced that this is good
But we're a dying breed, it's plain to see
We've cut off all our roots to the ground
I'm so sorry
It didn't, but it had to be
I'm so sorry
It started with a colony
I'm so sorry
It didn't, but it had to be
I'm so sorry
I just want us to all be free
And none of this is easy
Nothing ever will
In this society, so diseased
We're broken until
We breakdown all our systems,
Make changes 'til it's good
We need to plant the seeds, it's plain to see
We've turned to rotten fruit
And cut off all our roots to the ground

Produced by Appoggiatura Records, collaboration with Nerds in Denial
I wrote the original music and lyrics. The Nerds helped me fill out the vision I had in my head for a full band orchestration by adding their creative voices with my direction. I will forever be indebted to them, thank you boys!
